About the role

Speech and Language Pathology Assistant The job of Speech/Language Pathology Assistant is done for the purpose/s of providing appropriate speech therapy for students who have been identified with communication disorders to meet the individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and in collaboration with Speech and Language Pathologist; screening students for functional developmental levels in pre-language and language skills and oral motor control; and screening for possible communication challenges that would impact the student's learning. This job reports to Assigned Administrator.
Representative Duties: Attends meetings and workshops (e.g. training, team meetings, meetings with outside agencies, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information. Consults and collaborates with Speech Language Pathologists, teachers, class assistants, families, etc. for the purpose of providing requested information, reviewing students' speech therapy goals/objectives, contributing to developing the therapy plan. Implements therapeutic activities and instructs students, teachers, parents and other involved persons for the purpose of providing appropriate care to students and/or supporting the student's IEP plan. Maintains files and/or records (e.g. progress reports, billings, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or ensuring an up-to-date trail for compliance. Maintains therapy materials (e.g. toys, flashcards, books, board games, etc.) for the purpose of implementing therapy goals. Performs site visits at multiple work sites including home visits for the purpose of providing therapy and assistance as required. Prepares written materials (e.g. activity logs, progress notes, reports, memos, time studies, summer activities packets, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information. Presents information (e.g. student performance data, and clinical feedback, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls. Provides English translation when needed for the purpose of to ensure students and parents understand instructions. Provides direct speech therapy services to students according to IEP goals for the purpose of ensuring compliance with established practices and procedures. Provides training and instruction under the supervision of the SLP to teachers on the use of assistive devices (e.g. augmentative and alternative communication, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring such devices are used safely and optimal benefits are achieved. Reports incidents and observations (e.g. suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, administrative and/or school policies. Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, screening tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing students' functional goals. Transports a variety of items (e.g. puzzles, games, assistive devices, assessment tools, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required for therapy sessions. Troubleshoots problems with assistive devices (e.g. AAC, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that equipment is in proper working order and/or providing alternative strategies. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Initial/Minimum QualificationsEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:High School Diploma (or GED equivalent).A valid Speech and Language Pathology Assistant license (SLPA) issued by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board. Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Certificate from an agency authorized to issue a current, valid, and official certification. As part of the certification process the District may require registration as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant with the State of California. Any other combination of education, training, and experience, which demonstrates that the applicant is likely to possess the required skills, knowledge, or abilities, may be considered.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must maintain current Speech and Language Pathology registration throughout employment in this position. Valid Class C Driver's license & availability of private transportation. Valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification issued by the American Red Cross or any agency authorized by the American Red Cross. Valid First Aid certification issued by the American Red Cross or any agency authorized by the American Red Cross. Employees must maintain up-to-date certifications in CPR and First Aid during employment. Some positions may require the ability to read, write, and speak Spanish fluently. Some positions may require sign language skills. Preference will be given to applicants with: A BA in Speech Pathology or related field. Six months school-based experience working with individuals with speech and language disabilities in a structured environment, which can include field work experience (paid or voluntary), which involves learning the job responsibilities and workplace behaviors of the speech-language pathology assistant.
