Mission or Goal of UnitVCU's Department of Pediatrics iscommitted to training and developing the next generation ofdedicated pediatricians, caring for each child as if they were ourown and advancing the specialty and its myriad subspecialtiesthrough innovative research. Our central hub is at the Children’sHospital of Richmond at VCU in downtown Richmond, with satellitelocations and community clinics all throughout CentralVirginia.
Chief Purpose of this positionThe VCCN medical directorwill provide clinical expertise and leadership in value-based careand quality improvement for Virginia Children’s Care Network. Theywill work with the CHoR Executive leadership, VCCN ExecutiveDirector, VCCN Board and committee chairs, VCCN board members, andVCUHS staff and leadership to set network clinical goals andpriorities, to develop and select quality improvement andprofessional standards, and clearly articulate the mission andvision of VCCN. They will also be expected to participate in theCenter for Team Care. The medical director will co-lead efforts toexpand partnerships with both payers, practices, et. al. withinCentral Virginia, Northern Virginia, and other key markets in thestate. Directs the medical management, care coordination andquality improvement activities of VCCN and monitors all reports, information summaries, relevant publications, clinical, utilization, and financial data related to these activities incollaboration with VCCN leadership and staff and VCCN physician-ledcommittees.
Position ResponsibilitiesAdvises the planning, development, and implementationof strategies for improving health outcomes, quality care deliveryand cost containment in conjunction with VCCN leadership and staffand VCCN physician-led committees.
Communicates with colleagues, CHoR and VCUHS Department Chairs, VCUHS and medical practice administrative leadership, and legal andregulatory entities to champion the initiatives of the CIN.
Ensures communication and alignment with CHoR’s leadership andoverall quality strategy.
Engages and maintains relationships with private-practicephysician leaders in the community and CHoR faculty.
Engages and maintains relationships with VCUHS clinical andadministrative executive leaders.
Participates in community outreach efforts to educate and engagephysicians around clinical integration AND quality activities forpediatric patients.
Participates in the development and execution of payercontracting strategies in cooperation with the VCCN ExecutiveDirector and other staff of VCCN and member organizations.
Facilitates the review of quality and efficiency metrics to beapplied to physicians participating in VCCN and leads thedevelopment of recommended performance thresholds forincentive-based payments based on selected metrics, incollaboration with the VCCN Quality Improvement Committee.
Actively engages with VCCN Board of Managers and VCCNcommittees, as appropriate.
Assists in the development of future community physicianleaders within VCCN.
Leads and facilitates committees as needed to fostercollaboration between participating CIN physicians.
Develops a strong understanding of clinical quality andclinical integration programs, and governmental regulations thatrelate to and affect clinical integration activities.
Other duties as assigned by Executive Director of CIN.
In partnership with Center for Team Care Medical Director, helpassist in development of Center for Team Care protocols, practiceguidelines and other initiatives to improve delivery ofcontemporary, evidence based care for pediatric populations. Theywill work with other clinical leaders to ensure clear communicationto providers regarding the expectations and standards of clinicalcare.
Work with unit leaders and practices to reduce cost of care byrealizing episodic and urgent care visits inside our captivesystem, but also by implementing Center for Team Care protocols andguidelines to streamline care and improve patient outcomes throughproactive Pop Health care management using risk predictiontools.
Will lead with timely and effective bi-directionalcommunication to all sub-specialty providers thereby assisting inthe retention of employee and dependent care within VCU HealthSystems through an integrated network of primary care andspecialist care.
Will work with leaders and administrators to define and developnew business opportunities to meet anticipated, future needs of thecommunity of pediatric patients served.
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provideequitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served ontheir assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge and relatedcompetencies of the principles of growth and development of thelife span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective ofthe patient's status and interprets the appropriate informationneeded to identify each patient's requirements relative to theirage, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed asdescribed in departmental policies and procedures. Neonates (0-4weeks), Infant (1-12 months), Pediatrics (1-12 years), Adolescents(13-17 years).
Qualifications:
Required QualificationsMedical Degree is required with board certification in amedical specialty
Must have an active, valid and unrestricted license to practicemedicine in Virginia or ability to obtain one.
Ten (10) or more years of clinical practice experience in ahospital or health care system
Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to initiate andcultivate productive collaborative relationships with physicianleaders at partner organizations
Experience as an active listener and a change agent, withdemonstrated ability to build consensus. Experience with promotingphysician leadership development
Proven success working in a large complex organization withmatrix reporting relationships. Ability to maintain a high level ofsatisfaction with referring physicians/institutions andmembers
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
Must be able to negotiate and/or communicate with a widevariety of people. Must be able to travel to the various localpartner organization sites as needed
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environmentof respect, professionalism, and civility with a population offaculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds andexperiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member atVCU
Preferred QualificationsMPH or equivalent
Strong understanding of clinical quality and clinicalintegration programs
Contract negotiation and experience in population health
