The Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology, John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), seeks an early stage (Assistant Professor) investigator in Tropical Medicine to lead and support the Department’s basic sciences, clinical and translational research in emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, and to support the teaching/mentoring mission of the JABSOM.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching: 40%Teach assigned undergraduate and graduate courses (up to 6 credit hours per semester) including parasitology and One Health courses.
Serve as an instructor and coordinate teaching assistants for lab courses.
Serve as a research mentor and advisor for undergraduate and graduate students, medical students, and medical residents.
Coordinate and serve as a mentor for undergraduate research experiences and certificate capstone projects.
Research: 40%Participate in and support existing infectious diseases research interests while establishing/re-establishing own basic science, clinical or translational research program at JABSOM.
Relevant research interests in the Department include infectious disease pathogenesis, host-microbe interactions, infectious disease epidemiology and diagnostics, clinical trials, and vaccines and other novel engineering of prophylactic and therapeutic interventions against viral, bacterial and parasitic diseases such as HIV, SARS-CoV-2, dengue, West Nile virus, Zika, Filovirus, tuberculosis and other mycobacterial diseases, Leptospirosis, malaria, rat lungworm, and toxoplasmosis.
Collaborate with principal investigators within and outside of thedepartment engaged in various aspects of infectious diseases and host-pathogen interactions research.
Seek, secure and manage competitive extramural funding in various areas of tropical medicine research.
Present scholarly, peer-reviewed research outcomes nationally and internationally.
Publish research work in leading scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles in various areas of tropical medicine.
Service: 20%AttendJABSOM faculty development sessions and department meetings
Participate in the Department’s committees for graduate admissions, assessment and curriculum development and evaluation.
Participate in school and university-wide committees, and faculty senate.
Perform other academic tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ph. D. or equivalent terminal degree in Biological or Biomedical Sciences from a college or university of recognized standing with major coursework in parasitology and immunology, or a closely related field.
Demonstrated ability in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, and mentoring students effectively.
Demonstrated scholarly achievement with a peer-reviewed publication record in the field of parasitology, immunology, One Health or a closely related field.
Demonstrated ability to obtain research funding.
Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
Desirable Qualifications:
Ph. D. in a field closely aligned with Tropical Medicine.
Demonstrated experience in obtaining independent, extramural research funding.
At least 1-year prior experience teaching college-level biological science courses, including a course on parasitology, One-Health or a closely related field.
Demonstrated ability to contribute to the department’s teaching at all undergraduate and graduate levels.
