About the role

Key Office Metering Specialist Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. All employees are expected to maintain a permanent residence within the State of Utah as a condition of employment. New employees must provide a valid Utah residential address within 30 days of their start date.
Job Summary: The Key Office Metering Specialist supports campus operations through a combination of access control management and hands-on utility metering work across all Salt Lake Community College campuses and centers. This role includes both front-line office responsibilities and physically active fieldwork in mechanical rooms, utility spaces, rooftops, and building infrastructure areas. Duties include managing keys and electronic access systems, assisting customers, and maintaining accurate access records. A significant portion of this position involves on-site inspection, cleaning, documentation, and basic maintenance of utility submeters (electric, water, gas, BTU, and steam). The role requires regular physical activity, including walking campus grounds, climbing ladders, working in confined or mechanical spaces, and using basic hand tools and PPE. Training will be provided for all systems, equipment, and procedures. Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities Access Control & Office Operations Administer campus key and electronic access systems for doors, buildings, cabinets, equipment, and vehicles Process, issue, file, and retrieve keys while maintaining accurate inventory records Program, monitor, and audit computer-managed access control systems Provide front-line customer service to students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors Perform office duties including filing, data entry, phone support, scheduling, and report generation Open and close office operations and maintain secure handling of confidential materials Respond to requests, resolve issues, and support general administrative needs Field-Based Metering & Physical Facility Work Perform hands-on inspection and maintenance of utility submeters including electric, water, gas, BTU, and steam systems Access and work in mechanical rooms, utility spaces, rooftops, and infrastructure areas across campus Clean, inspect, and verify meter functionality, readability, and proper operation Record meter readings and document findings, maintenance activities, and inspection results Identify and report infrastructure issues such as leaks, corrosion, damaged wiring, loose connections, or malfunctioning equipment Assist in locating, labeling, and documenting meters for repair, calibration, or replacement Perform minor maintenance tasks such as replacing low-voltage fuses following approved safety procedures Use ladders, hand tools, and PPE while following all safety protocols in active facility environments Documentation, Safety & General Support Maintain accurate logs, work orders, inspection records, and system documentation Conduct audits and ensure accuracy of access control and metering data Follow established safety procedures and report unsafe conditions immediately Work independently after training and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment Perform other duties as assigned Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Minimum Qualifications: 02 years of experience in facilities maintenance, utilities, construction, HVAC support, plumbing, custodial work, or similar hands-on technical field (training provided for systems and procedures) Ability to perform physical work including walking campuses, climbing ladders, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working in mechanical/utility environments Ability to safely use basic hand tools and wear required PPE Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and accurately document data Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn metering and access control systems Ability to identify, report, and communicate equipment or safety issues Reliable attendance and ability to work independently after training Ability to handle confidential information appropriately Valid Utah driver's license (required and maintained) Ability to pass a background check Education and relevant experience may be substituted when the minimum qualification does not require a specific degree, license, certification, accreditation standard, or other requirement for which substitution would be inappropriate (Trade off 1:1 full-time experience/education requirement. Part-time experience can be considered on a prorated basis (Trade off 2:1)
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with key systems, key duplication, or electronic access control systems (including card/proximity systems) Experience working in mechanical rooms or with building utility systems Familiarity with utility meters, gauges, sensors, or building automation systems Basic experience using a multimeter or diagnostic tools Experience performing field inspections or infrastructure data collection Strong clerical or administrative experience Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) Familiarity with Banner or similar institutional systems Experience using mobile devices or tablets for field documentation and data entry Familiarity with SLCC campuses and facilities
