Regional Environmental Protection Specialist
Full Time Fort Totten, NY, US
Salary Range: $75,000.00 To $85,000.00 Annually
Gryphon Environmental is hiring a Regional Environmental Protection Specialist to keep U.S. Army Reserve facilities across Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey in compliance with environmental law. You will be the environmental point of contact for the facilities in your region, on site most of the week, working directly with the people who run them.
This is a field job. About 70% of your time is spent visiting your assigned facilities. The rest is split between working from home and an office at a 99th Readiness Division facility, with Fort Totten as your base. Your job is to make sure each facility is operated and maintained in line with Federal, State, and local environmental laws and regulations, Executive Orders, and DoD, Army, and Army Reserve regulations and policy.
If you like being out of the office, solving real compliance problems, and owning a territory, this is a good fit. It is also a strong role for someone early in an environmental career who wants broad exposure across nearly every media area.
WHAT YOU'LL DO: Internal Assessments
Perform internal environmental assessments of your assigned facilities in accordance with Federal, State, and local regulations, DoD regulations, the USACE Environmental Assessment and Management (TEAM) Guides, and applicable checklists.
Document site visits and findings in the appropriate Army databases.
Conduct follow-up visits at any facility with Class 1 or Class 2 findings.
Update the Installation Corrective Action Plan (ICAP) as needed.
External Assessments
Support the 99th RD during external environmental assessments.
Site Assistance Visits (SAVs)
Conduct environmental SAVs for every facility in your area of responsibility.
Program Support
Provide general environmental support to the 99th RD and serve as the technical point of contact for environmental agencies, organizations, contractors, and other executive agents of the 99th RD.
Deliver environmental compliance training to facility personnel.
Collect stormwater and wastewater samples to support compliance with applicable permits.
Provide technical assistance to the Environmental Division's programs and projects, including research, analysis, development, coordination, and management, under the direction of the 99th RD environmental staff and in coordination with the Operations Team.
MEDIA AREAS YOU'LL WORK IN
You should have working knowledge of the areas below, or the drive to learn them:
Hazardous and solid waste
Pollution prevention and waste minimization
Spill response
Stormwater, wastewater, and drinking water
Underground and aboveground storage tanks
National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
Cultural and natural resources
Integrated pest management
Remediation
Toxic Substances Control Act (asbestos, lead-based paint, PCBs, and radon)
Other media areas as required
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
B.S. in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field, and at least 2 years of environmental compliance or field experience. An M.S. counts as 2 years of experience.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work with people at every level of an organization.
Confidence and willingness to give presentations and lead training sessions for small and large groups.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Microsoft SharePoint, and the willingness and ability to learn software systems specific to the Army Reserve.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid U.S. driver's license.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of the Army background investigation.
Access to a reliable automobile. Use of a personal vehicle is mandatory for this position.
Willingness to travel. Travel is about 70% of the job, mostly within the assigned region, with some travel outside it.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
2 to 3 years of environmental compliance experience.
