Position Overview:
Provides leadership and operational oversight for the Anatomic Pathology Department, ensuring departmental responsibilities are completed accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with hospital policies, laboratory procedures, and regulatory requirements. This role supervises daily operations, manages departmental personnel, supports quality initiatives, and promotes responsible financial stewardship.
Key Responsibilities
Department and Staff Leadership:
Supervises department personnel and ensures adherence to established policies, procedures, and performance standards.
Oversees daily operations across histology, surgical pathology, cytopathology, and pathology administrative support, including the review of operational logs and departmental charges.
Assists with the preparation of tissue and cytology specimens for diagnostic evaluation by pathologists.
Manages the recruitment, onboarding, training, development, and performance evaluation of direct reports.
Addresses employee performance concerns through coaching and corrective action and manages terminations when necessary.
Provides ongoing education and in-service training on laboratory practices, procedures, and technical principles.
Ensures all required training and competency assessments are completed and properly documented.
Develops rotating staff schedules to maintain appropriate coverage and effectively manage departmental workloads.
Quality and Regulatory Compliance:
- Leads quality assurance and process-improvement initiatives to support accurate, efficient, and consistent laboratory operations.
- Coordinates inspection-readiness activities and ensures continued compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments requirements.
- Monitors departmental practices to ensure all sections meet the standards of applicable regulatory and accrediting agencies. Certification & Licensures:
- ASCP Certification as either a Histotechnologist; Histotechnician; Cytotechnologist; or Pathologists' Assistant (PA)- RequiredASCP Certification as Histotechnology Specialist - Preferred
Experience: 2 Years leadership experience - Required
