Overview As Science Writer/Editor at the Kempner Institute, you will craft engaging stories and institutional writing that highlight cutting‑edge AI and neuroscience research. You will work with faculty and researchers to translate complex work for broad audiences, strengthen the Institute’s visibility, and coordinate with Harvard-wide communications. The role blends journalism, editorial duties, and social media to advance the Institute’s priorities. You will collaborate across teams to maintain a consistent, compelling narrative and meet tight deadlines. Translate complex basic and translational research and AI/neuroscience themes into accessible narratives for scientific and general audiences. Produce publish-ready content with high standards for accuracy, clarity, and tone. Independently develop and maintain story ideas and robust coverage for the Institute’s website, social media, newsletter, and Harvard publications. Develop and maintain relationships with faculty, researchers, and students across the Institute. Collaborate with communications colleagues across the University to promote the Institute’s editorial work. Navigate constituencies to ensure materials meet institutional standards and audience needs. Manage the Institute’s social media channels (X, Bluesky, Linked In); shape and implement social media strategy for growth and brand-aligned content. Serve as backup copy editor for colleagues’ content as assigned. Key requirements Bachelor’s degree 4+ years of science news writing or comparable journalism experience Exceptional storytelling and news judgment with ability to translate complex science into clear prose Content fluency in natural and/or artificial intelligence topics and willingness to learn Entrepreneurial mindset with ability to source and pitch original story ideas Ability to interpret peer‑reviewed research, conduct interviews, write on deadline, edit, fact‑check, and translate into plain language Excellent attention to detail and editing for accuracy, clarity, style, and tone Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to manage multiple projects and shifting deadlines Excellent interpersonal skills and collaborative spirit; able to work independently and as part of a team Diplomatic approach to feedback; sense of humor and patience in a complex academic environment Comfort with technologies and digital platforms/tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Word Press or similar CMS); willingness to learn new tools as needed Excellent interpersonal skills Collaborative spirit Diplomatic with feedback Word Press or similar CMSMicrosoft Office Adobe Acrobat
