Job Description: Purpose of Position : The Staff Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will work with the Medical Oncology Division of the Department of Medicine and Radiation Oncology Division. The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will assist the attending oncologists in all areas of patient care in the Oncologist Service. Rotation and call schedules will be determined by patient need and may include both nighttime on-call responsibilities and weekend coverage.

  • Oncologistsand other extenders on the Hospital’sMedical Staff in clinically integrating the Hospital’sOncologyservice across inpatient and outpatient settings as well as across all Hospital sites and otherwise within the Cape Cod Healthcare system.

  • Hospital Rounds asdeterminedby the
  • Oncologyteam and based on patient needs and demands.
Under the general direction of the collaborating /supervisingoncologist, elicits the history of thepresent illness, performs physical examination, assessfamilyand socialhistory, ordersappropriate diagnosticstudies and provides treatment of acuteproblems foroncology patients, collaborating with outside facilities as needed Provides follow-up care for specificoncology patients includingprescriptions for medication, blood products, routine diagnostics andfollow-up studies and therapeutic measuresin accordance withwritten practiceguidelines. TheNP/PAwill write prescriptions aspermittedbystate regulations and his/her license. Relaysappropriate clinicalinformationregardingpatient care to thecollaborating/supervising physician and referring physicians. Responsible for many aspects of care under the supervision of the attending physician, including but not limited to reviewing fluid and electrolyte management, nutrition, pain management, transfusion therapy, anticoagulation management, education and survivorship care plans provision, reviewing and signing laboratory and imaging resultsand triage to the emergency department or other care settingsas needed. Following procedures, manage, monitorchemo and immunotherapytreatmentand perform bone marrow biopsiesunder the supervision of the attending physician Assistsin the evaluation and management of clinical events such as treatment reactions andacute patient issues related to disease process or treatment. Returnscalls to patients and Hospital personnel ona timelybasis. Placetimelycalls to patients and Hospital personnel as needed for ancillary test results, to order follow-up tests, and/or toinitiatetreatment orders, etc. The StaffNurse Practitioneror Physician Assistantwillbeimmediatelyavailable to nurses and other Hospital staff for questions and problems relating to patientsduring the course oftheir Hospitaltreatment (whether inpatient or outpatient) as well as on admission and discharge related matters. Interacts with interdisciplinary staff and external resources foroptimalpatient careincluding assisting with insurance prior authorization peer to peer reviews as needed Implements treatment plan by prescribing/dispensing medications and/or injections in compliance with medical practice guidelines and state laws. Participates in peerreview, chartreview, staff education, clinical guideline development, and other continuing education and quality assurance activities todemonstratecompliance with standards, regulations, policies, and procedures. Completesa medical evaluation report and completes necessary documentationin the medical record. Completes billingin a timely mannerandparticipatesin insurance prior authorization peer review as necessary Performs all responsibilities/ duties required by the position, departmentand hospital as described in the scope of service, toassurethat the uniquenature of the patient served is addressed. Assesses patientand family education and psychosocial needs and implementsplanto addressthese. In collaboration withoncologyteam, maintainsand develops policies andprocedures and standards of care. Evaluates the quality of care provided andrecommends changes for improvement. Maintains current knowledge of healthcare practices byparticipatingineducational offerings and professional organizations. Makes a significant andsustainedcontribution to the nursing profession. Demonstratesprofessionalism and accountability. Determines eligibility of patients for entry into clinical trials. Applies current concepts and findings from research or studies to practice. Supervise physician assistant/nursepractitionerstudents who do clinical rotations in the Oncology department as directed by the attending physician. Participates in orientation ofnew staffas needed. Provides nighttime and/or weekend coverage including hospital rounds and call asdeterminedby theoncology team and based on patient needs and demands. Perform otherwork relatedduties as requested/directed.
Qualifications
NURSE PRACTIONER EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING: Masters prepared Nurse Practitioner
At least1-yearexperienceasanNPLicense to practice as a registered nurse in Massachusetts Certified bythe Massachusetts Board of Registration as a Nurse Practitioner Certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Centeror American Academy of Nurse PractitionersUSDepartment ofJustice DEA Registrationand Commonwealth of Massachusetts Controlled SubstanceDEARegistrationarerequiredfor prescribing practitionersCurrent Basic Life Support Certification Oncology Certified Nursepreferred Advanced Oncology Certified Nursepreferred Outpatient/ambulatory Oncology experience preferredMust have broad knowledge of the medical environment and surgical procedures. Must exercise the highest degree of professional judgment under the directionand guidance of a licensed physician/surgeon. Must be able to manage and direct other clinical staffin order to carry outpatient care plans. Must leverage staffing resources and take action whenclinical or professional performance does not meet the standards of care. Must be able to accept instruction andguidance asassumegradedresponsibility within a complex teamwork framework. Must be able to administer suchcare and treatmentand exercise independent originality in problem solving not covered by existing guidelines, withinlegal limits, to meet the needs of the patient. Mustmaintaina professional attitude toward patients and family members at all times and develop sound working relationships with other staff involved inpatient care. To maintain and enhance skill and clinicalcompetencemust attend internal and external educational meetings and read appropriate professional journals andliterature.
