Job TitleThis position provides management, supervision, and direction for a large clinic or multiple professional skilled nursing care units for incarcerated inmates in either an outpatient clinic, infirmary, or specialized cell house setting.
Job Description: This position is responsible and accountable 24 hours per day for the nursing management and administration of a clinical unit. It provides leadership and vision while supervising, organizing, and reviewing and evaluating the work of all assigned staff. It is responsible for the hiring and recommending corrective and disciplinary action of all assigned staff. It assumes responsibility for payroll, scheduling of Nurse III's, approves and monitors schedules for floor nurses and agency usage, and day-to-day operational activities. It ensures that assigned staff receives appropriate in-service education and training. It assists the Health Services Administrator and may function in that capacity in their absence. It is responsible for liaison interface between the Clinical Unit and other DOC departments, other facilities, and outside agencies. It facilitates team building within the unit and between the Clinical Unit and other DOC departments. It is responsible for budget, reporting, conflict resolution, inmate grievances, and maintaining a comprehensive inmate medical record. It is responsible for maintaining the standards of care for the work unit. It directs and coordinates the timely reporting of statistical and quality assessment data. It performs as a resource person for all standards, including ACA, and is responsible for nursing components of accreditation. It reviews and monitors CQI compliance. It formulates and implements policies and procedures essential to promoting quality care. It is responsible and accountable for ensuring staff compliance with all Life/Safety policies and procedures. It may occasionally be required to participate in restraining an inmate for medical reasons. It attends training programs as assigned including 2 day self-defense to ensure self protection skills. Minimum qualifications: Applicants must possess a valid, active Registered Nurse License from the State of Colorado or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC); Applicants must have four (4) years of professional experience as a Registered Nurse. Substitutions: Appropriate education will substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience on a year-for-year basis. You must attach a copy of your transcripts to utilize the substitutions. Your transcripts must contain the name of the college/university, type of degree received, date the degree was awarded/conferred, your name, last four of social security number or student ID number. Required competencies: Self-control, a strong sense of ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations; Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure and observant throughout their shift; Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high-stakes interaction Ability to provide direct patient care to inmates; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Ability to read and comprehend the English language; Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing; Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind. Ability to problem solve and think critically to effectively resolve issues; The ability to be an effective leader in a complex environment; Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across facility programs and disciplines; Advanced knowledge of clinical skills; Ability to facilitate patient care within a multi-disciplinary health care program.
Preferred qualifications: Experience providing medical care to an incarcerated population. At least two years of nursing supervisory experience. Supervision is exercising span and control over subordinate staff to include coaching, mentoring, daily monitoring, performance management (planning, reviewing and evaluating), resolving complaints/grievances at the informal level, responsibility for scheduling and leave approval, and providing input that could impact pay, status, or tenure; Professional experience as a registered nurse in a correctional environment; Experience supervising professional health care staff in an acute patient care environment.

Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics; Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics; Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist; Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down; Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows; Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows; Swing a baton in a striking technique; Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic; Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions; Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment; Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security; Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury; Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently; Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations; Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner; Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed inmates; Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments; Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;
