Reports To: Board of Directors
Classification: Full-Time, Exempt
Location:
Remote, GlobalNon-Voting Board Seat: YesAbout This RoleThe Global Executive Director is the person who keeps it resourced: cultivating the relationships, commitments, and capital that lead the Boards’ and organisation’s vision while the Steward of Operations function actually runs the operational processes. This is a business development and fundraising role first, built for someone who treats a seven-figure commitment as a relationship to steward, not a transaction to close. The Executive Director operates at the level of resourcing: where relationships meet revenue, where mission meets capital, where strategy meets the practical work of keeping an international nonprofit funded. The ED holds the narrative and interconnected system relationships. The Steward of Operations executes the systems that deliver the narrative. The role is weighted deliberately: half of the Executive Director's time is spent on business development and fundraising of high-value commitments, a quarter on strategy and vision, and a quarter on organizational and leadership work. Business Development & Fundraising — 35%This is the center of gravity for the role, and the majority of the Executive Director's time and Board accountability sits here. Owning the strategy, pipeline, and personal cultivation of high-value commitments: major gifts, foundation grants, institutional partnerships, and impact investment relationships Setting and driving annual fundraising targets, with a minimum 10% year-over-year growth expectation in line with Board-approved goals Leading Project Biome's development and fundraising function, including direct leadership of the Steward of Development & Fundraising and close coordination with the governance and fundraising work. Cultivating and stewarding relationships with major donors, philanthropic partners, and impact investors, where donor relationships intersect with public partnership and narrative Representing Project Biome at fundraising convenings, donor meetings, and high-value gatherings, virtually and in person Diversifying revenue across grants, individual giving, and institutional partnerships so no single funding source can sink the organization Strategy & Vision — 35%Partnering with the Executive Board and the Board of Directors to ground Project Biome's global vision in what is actually fundable, translating ambition into a resourced strategic plan Presiding over the Executive Board and participating in the governance committee, guiding the integration of Indigenous knowledge systems and the King IV governance framework into how Project Biome hires, pays, and operates internationally. Alongside the Steward of Operations, ensuring compliance across sectors. Bringing funder and donor intelligence into strategic planning conversations, so growth decisions are made with financial reality in view Contributing to long-range scenario planning for regenerative finance and biological wealth stewardship. Organizational & Leadership — 30%Providing direct leadership to the development and fundraising team, setting priorities, reviewing performance, and building a culture where fundraising is mission work, not a numbers game Co-developing, with the Boards and HR, the organizational leadership model and the values that inform itMaintaining a consistent communication rhythm with the Board and Executive Board members on goals, fundraising progress, and organizational health Supporting hiring and retention for the development function, in partnership with the Steward of Operations and HR Consultant Owning the monitoring, evaluation, and reporting cycle for fundraising performance, and communicating results clearly to the Boards, stakeholders, and donors Board and Leadership Partnership The Executive Director, Executive Board, Steward of Living Systems, Fractional CPO, Fractional CFO and Steward of Operations form Project Biome's global leadership layer. The division is clear by design. The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors and holds a non-voting board seat The Executive Director is externally facing who builds relationships and opens doors, the Executive Director closes and stewards the high-value commitments that follow The COO holds internal operations and compliance; the Executive Director does not manage operational teams outside the development function All three roles meet regularly with the Board to align fundraising targets, strategic priorities, and organizational capacity
What We Are Looking For:
- A demonstrated track record of closing major gifts, institutional grants, or high-value partnerships, ideally in a nonprofit or regenerative, mission-aligned context
- Fundraising leadership experience: setting targets, building a pipeline, and leading a development team toward them
- Comfort operating internationally and across cultures, particularly across Africa and North America
- Strategic fluency: able to hold vision and translate it into a resourced plan
- Experience with nonprofit governance, board engagement, and fiduciary responsibility
- Existing networks among philanthropic funders, impact investors, and mission-aligned wealth holders
- Deep personal alignment with Project Biome's values: regeneration, rematriation of knowledge, ecological reciprocity, and living systems thinking
