Software Engineer II (Backend, Core)

Overview In this role you will design and deliver backend services that power the WHOOP App and member-facing experiences. You’ll help scale foundational systems for fitness, sleep, strain, recovery, and integrations, working with cross-functional partners to ship reliable software. You will improve reliability, performance, and observability while contributing to shared engineering foundations. This position offers the chance to shape essential product infrastructure and collaborate with product, design, data science, and performance science teams. Responsibilities Own design, implementation, and delivery of backend services powering member-facing experiences. Translate product requirements into engineering work, identifying risks and dependencies. Improve system reliability, performance, and observability via testing and monitoring. Contribute to engineering foundations through code reviews, documentation, and technical discussions. Mentor and support other engineers through collaboration and feedback. Key requirements Ability to deliver production-quality software independently while collaborating across teams. Strong backend skills with Java, RESTful APIs, and Postgres. Experience with cloud platforms and asynchronous systems (Kafka or SQS).Proven design, testing, and maintenance of reliable, scalable backend services. Understanding of distributed systems, observability, and performance optimization. Strong collaboration and communication with cross-functional partners.
