About the role

Overview In this role you will lead the conception, commissioning, and editing of travel content for National Geographic’s print and digital products. You’ll work with a wide freelance network to develop ideas across formats, with a focus on narrative travel journalism that shines visually. You will steer recurring travel franchises, explore new storytelling approaches across video and audio, and represent the brand at events and with partners. This is an opportunity to help Nat Geo evolve travel storytelling to grow audiences across platforms. Compensation / Benefitsbonus and/or long-term incentive unitsmedical benefitsfinancial benefitsother benefitscompensation varies by regionfull range of benefits Responsibilities Conceive and pitch travel story ideas for Nat Geo magazine and in collaboration with freelancers Commission, produce, edit, and prepare stories with photo editors, designers, cartographers, infographics, and digital producers Define and shape narrative travel journalism for Nat Geo magazine Conceptualize and execute ideas for recurring travel series and franchises for digital and social platforms Lead editor for Best of the World franchise, shaping approach, content selection, commissioning, editing, and publishing Develop new approaches to travel storytelling across media types, including video and audio Expand roster of freelance writers and creators in travel space Collaborate with newsletter and social editors on promotion and amplification of travel content Partner with sales and marketing on editorial ideas for sponsors and with internal stakeholders Collaborate with UK travel publishing partner to ensure appropriate topics and geographies across digital platforms Represent Nat Geo at industry events and as media spokesperson; engage with cross-divisional initiatives Key requirements 5+ years conceiving, assigning, and editing editorial content across print and digital Experience with print production and digital editing including SEO and tagging Experience creating content for third-party platforms (newsletters, social media)Experience developing multi-component packages and recurring franchises with evidence of attracting attention and PRStrong visual sense for storytelling across print, digital, and social Strong knowledge of travel industry and travel journalism, including narrative storytelling Well-developed freelance network and standout writing and first-person storytelling Excellent written and oral communication; public speaking and media appearances preferred Understanding of evolving media landscape and travel media competition Collaborative, cross-functional work style with ability to multitask under deadlinescollaborativestrong communicationpublic speaking (preferred)SEOtaggingdigital editing and production
