Job Description
Position Summary:
TECO-Westinghouse Motor Company is seeking a Data Center Field Technician responsible for the day-to-day installation, splicing, testing, and documentation of fiber optic infrastructure in data center and telecommunications environments. The technician will work under supervisor direction and follow engineering drawings, project documentation, and established industry standards to deliver high-quality, reliable fiber installations. This position requires hands-on experience with fiber optic installation and splicing, as well as familiarity with industry-standard testing equipment. Travel of approximately 33% is required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install and align data cabinets, racks, and Optical Distribution Frames (ODFs) according to engineering drawings and project requirements.
- Install and label pathway support systems, including: Basket trays
- Ladder racks
- Cable managers
- WaterfallsPull, route, dress, and secure pre-connectorized fiber and patch cords in racks, cabinets, and panels under supervisor direction.
- Perform fiber cable splicing for both single-mode and multimode fiber, including: Fiber preparation
- StrippingCleaningSplicingFiber protection
- Install and manage fibers within splice trays, enclosures, and patch panels according to industry standards.
- Terminate and inspect fiber connectors to ensure low-loss, high-quality terminations.
- Use industry-standard fiber testing equipment, including: Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR)
- Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS)
- Light source
- Power meter
- Visual Fault Locator (VFL)
- Fiber inspection scopes
- Perform fiber link testing and certification.
- Document basic test results, including insertion loss and continuity.
- Update splicing records and fiber-assignment documentation as directed.
- Support troubleshooting activities by collecting test data and assisting with repairs.
- Follow all applicable TIA/EIA, FOA, NEC, OSHA, and company safety and quality requirements while working onsite.
- Maintain compliance with Company ISO 9001 standards and safety procedures.
- Maintain regular attendance as an essential function of the position.
- Travel approximately 33% as required.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- RequiredExperience Hands-on experience with fiber optic installation, splicing, and testing in data center or telecommunications infrastructure.
- Proficiency with fusion splicers and standard fiber preparation tools.
- Ability to read and follow: Network design drawings
- Splice schematics
- Rack elevations
- Project documentation
- Familiarity with OTDRs, OLTS, power meters, VFLs, and fiber inspection scopes.
- Ability to perform basic fiber testing and interpret test results.
- Solid understanding of OSHA and NEC requirements related to low-voltage and fiber optic work.
Education & Experience:
High School Diploma required. Associate's degree (A.A.) or technical school training preferred.1–3 years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certifications:

Preferred Qualifications:
- Vendor or manufacturer training, such as Corning or Fujikura
- Experience working in hyperscale or enterprise data centers
- Experience with large-scale fiber optic projects.
- Experience with data center fiber infrastructure and structured cabling environments.

Ability to perform calculations necessary for fiber installation, testing, and documentation.
Reasoning & Problem-Solving Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to identify solutions to problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to collect and document test data and assist with troubleshooting and corrective actions.
Work Style This position operates under general supervision and requires a self-starter who can effectively follow project requirements, take ownership of assigned tasks, and work in a fast-paced data center and field environment.
The successful candidate should be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, accuracy, and adherence to project specifications
Work Environment & Physical Requirements This position regularly requires standing, walking, using hands and fingers, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, as well as talking and hearing. The employee may frequently be required to climb or balance and may occasionally be required to sit.
The position may occasionally require lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The work environment includes regular exposure to vibration and frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. Occasional exposure may include wet or humid conditions, elevated or precarious locations, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
