Job Description
Reports to: Foreman Classification: Full-time, hourly, non-exempt Location: Job sites — Columbia, SC and surrounding areas; travel between sites required
Position Summary: The Form Carpenter builds, sets, aligns, braces and strips the formwork that shapes cast-in-place concrete. The work covers footings, foundations, slabs on grade, walls, columns, elevated decks, stairs and site concrete. The role works under a foreman to deliver formwork that is accurate, safe and ready for inspection and placement on schedule.
Key Responsibilities: Read and interpret construction drawings, formwork layouts, shop drawings and specifications. Lay out and establish lines, grades and elevations using tape, string line, transit, laser level or total station. Build, assemble and set formwork from dimensional lumber, plywood and manufactured systems (gang forms, aluminum forms, column forms, shoring).Install and secure form ties, snap ties, bulkheads, keyways, chamfer, blockouts, sleeves and embeds to plan. Plumb, level, square, brace and shore forms to hold tolerances and resist concrete pressure during placement. Coordinate with rebar, MEP and finishing crews so embeds, penetrations and reinforcing are in place before pour. Stand by forms during concrete placement to watch for movement, leaks or failure and make adjustments. Strip, clean, oil, repair and stack forms for reuse; sort and store materials to reduce waste. Operate and maintain hand and power tools safely; report damaged equipment. Measure, cut and build stairs, curbs, ramps and other site concrete forms as assigned. Keep work areas clean and organized and follow housekeeping standards. Report progress, material needs and field issues to the foreman.
Requirements:
  • Required 2+years of experience as a form carpenter on commercial or industrial concrete projects (or completion of a carpentry apprenticeship).Ability to read blueprints and formwork drawings and take accurate measurements.
  • Working knowledge of formwork systems, form ties, bracing and shoring.
  • Proficiency with carpentry hand tools, power saws, drills and layout instruments.
  • Basic math for measurements, fractions, angles and material takeoffs.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and work as part of a crew.
  • Reliable transportation to jobsites
  • PreferredOSHA 10-Hour Construction card (OSHA 30 a plus).Experience with laser levels or total stations.
  • Forklift, telehandler or aerial lift certification.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
  • Physical requirements and working conditions
  • Lift, carry and move materials up to 75 lbs regularly; heavier loads with help or equipment.
  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and climb for most of a shift.
  • Work at heights on ladders, scaffolding, elevated decks and in trenches or excavations.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, concrete, form oil and moving equipment.
  • Use required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility vest and safety-toe boots.
