EC Teacher - Elementary Resource The Charlotte Lab School Exceptional Children's Teacher – Resource/Inclusive Services is responsible for providing specialized instruction, case management, and instructional support to students with disabilities in partnership with general education teachers, families, related service providers, and school leaders. The EC Teacher will support students primarily in inclusive and resource settings and will ensure that students receive the services, accommodations, modifications, and specialized instruction identified in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).The ideal candidate believes that students with disabilities should have meaningful access to rigorous, engaging instruction and opportunities to participate fully in the Lab community.
Responsibilities: Specialized Instruction & Student Support Provide specially designed instruction to students with disabilities based on individual student needs and IEP goals. Deliver instruction in resource, small-group, individual, and inclusive classroom settings. Design and implement differentiated instruction, accommodations, modifications, interventions, and supports aligned to students' IEPs. Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure students with disabilities have meaningful access to grade-level standards, curriculum, and classroom experiences. Support students in developing academic, executive functioning, communication, social-emotional, and self-advocacy skills as appropriate. Use flexible grouping, targeted intervention, and data-driven instructional practices to meet student needs. Support students in applying skills learned in resource settings to the general education classroom and other school environments. Facilitate interdisciplinary instruction and challenge-based learning aligned with Lab's Quest model. IEP Case Management & Compliance Develop, implement, monitor, and maintain IEPs in accordance with IDEA, North Carolina requirements, and Charlotte Lab School procedures. Serve as case manager for assigned students and coordinate the provision of services identified in their IEPs. Collect and analyze student data to monitor progress toward IEP goals and inform instructional planning. Complete required progress reports and maintain accurate documentation within established timelines. Coordinate and participate in IEP meetings, reevaluations, eligibility meetings, and other required meetings. Maintain compliant special education records and protect the confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA and applicable law. Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, strengths, needs, and areas requiring additional support. Collaborate with related service providers and other members of the student support team to coordinate services and supports. Collaboration Meet regularly with general education teachers, EC staff, administrators, related service providers, and other support staff. Provide consultation and coaching to classroom teachers regarding accommodations, modifications, instructional strategies, behavior supports, and student needs. Participate actively in weekly team meetings and collaborative planning. Assist in developing and adapting instructional materials to meet individual student needs. Advocate for students and promote high expectations, inclusion, belonging, and student independence. School &
Community Responsibilities: Supervise students and maintain a safe, orderly, positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment. Proctor standardized assessments and support appropriate testing accommodations. Participate in school-wide community activities, professional development, teacher evaluation, recruitment, and other Lab initiatives. Serve as an advisor to a small group of students and support the academic, social-emotional, and community-building goals of the advisory program. Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications: Required Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution. Current or eligible North Carolina Exceptional Children's teaching license appropriate to the grade levels and disability areas served, or willingness and ability to obtain appropriate NC licensure. Experience working with students with disabilities and/or demonstrated ability to quickly develop expertise in special education practices. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with general education teachers, families, and student support professionals. Demonstrated commitment to high expectations and meaningful inclusion for students with disabilities.
Physical Requirements: The employee must have the ability to perform the following physical tasks. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities: Sit, stand, and walk for extended periods throughout the instructional day Lift and carry classroom materials, instructional resources, and student work (up to 50 pounds), with or without accommodations Bend, kneel, and reach to access materials, work at student level, and assist students Climb stairs and navigate multiple levels of the building as required Use fine motor skills including writing, typing, and manipulating small objects Hear and respond to student needs, questions, and behavioral issues See clearly to monitor student work, write on boards, and read instructional materials Speak clearly and project voice to be heard in classroom and group settings without amplification Assist students with personal hygiene needs as appropriate (for primary grades)Respond quickly to student safety emergencies and assist students in evacuation procedures Transport students or materials as needed for instructional purposes Use hand-eye coordination for writing, computer work, and classroom activities Preferred At least three years of full-time teaching experience. Experience serving as an EC case manager. Experience developing and implementing IEPs. Experience working in inclusive classrooms using co-teaching and differentiated instruction. Experience supporting students with moderate disabilities. Experience with progress monitoring, data collection, and evidence-based interventions. Experience with assistive technology and/or AAC.Advanced degree or specialized training in special education or a related field. Experience with restorative practices, trauma-informed practices, and/or crisis prevention/intervention. Comfort with technology and Google Workspace for Education.
