IntroductionThe State of Connecticut, Department of Children and Families (DCF), is looking for two (2) Special Education educators to join us in the role of State School Teacher within our Unified School District #2 (USD #2) in Middletown, CT. POSITION HIGHLIGHTSLOCATION: Middletown, CT
SHIFT: Full-time | first shift
SCHEDULE: 7:50 AM - 3:20 PM | 35 hours per week
NOTE: While most education positions are offered during the academic year (10 months), this is a year-round (12 month) position.
SALARY: Candidates new to the State of Connecticut will start on 'Step One' of the pay plan, in the tier that their highest level of education corresponds to. YOUR ROLE: In this role, we would entrust you to work extensively with teachers and administration to help students improve their learning skills. This position will report to the USD #2 Assistant Superintendent and will collaborate closely with the medical team. Along with other duties as needed, in this role, you will: Provide specific strategies for teaching and supporting students with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness; Collaborate with classroom teachers as well as support staff, monitor student progress, and coordinate assessments as necessary; Support student growth through teamwork. ABOUT US: DCF has a mission to work together with families and communities so that children can grow up healthy, safe, smart, and strong. Unified School District 2 (USD #2) is a school district established by Connecticut General Statute 17a-37 and which operates within the Department of Children and Families under the supervision of a Superintendent of Schools. It provides educational services to students who reside in DCF facilities and whose treatment needs require they receive their education within the facility. It also provides educational services to student who are no-nexus and who have been placed by DCF in a private residential facility, psychiatric hospital or in the residential component of a Regional Education Services Center (RESC). Albert J. Solnit Children’s Center – South Campus (Middletown) Located in the heart of Middletown, the South Campus is a state-run facility nationally recognized for its family-centered care. We serve youth facing significant emotional and psychiatric challenges, offering intensive support in a therapeutic, team-based setting. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In a state institution, facility or region within a state unified school district this class teaches appropriate early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subjects and/or special education curricula to individuals enrolled in departmental education programs. EXAMPLES OF DUTIESTeaches early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subject and/or special education curricula; Develops educational plans for individuals and groups material level to students ability; Sets short and long term goals and evaluates progress of students; Participates in planning team meetings and case review conferences assessing student behavior; Relates to professionals in ancillary educational roles; Maintains student records and writes reports; May hold conferences with parents or officials concerned with student's performance; Performs related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITYKnowledge of the philosophy and methods of education and teaching; the principles and practices of education for special needs population; student program needs and goal setting; Ability to motivate students; communicate at the appropriate level; establish cooperative relationships with those contacted in work; prepare written reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Special education Certification 165. Experience working with students with mental health concerns in a hospital setting. Experience teaching multiple subject areas.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employment in this class is conditional upon possession of a valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate appropriate to the teaching assignment. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator's license.
