Senior Agentic AI Engineer II - Global Infrastructure

Overview In this role you will advance AI/ML capabilities and natural language processing at scale within American Express. You’ll translate complex business needs into scalable models while optimizing data pipelines and ensuring governance and compliance. You’ll mentor engineers, drive production-ready AI systems, and collaborate with product and business teams to align technology with strategic goals. You’ll work on cutting-edge AI architectures, including LLMs and retrieval-driven workflows, to deliver high-impact, reliable solutions. This is a hands-on, leadership-heavy role at the intersection of AI research and enterprise delivery. Compensation / Benefitsbonusbenefitshybrid work Responsibilities Supervise and mentor AI engineers and cross-functional colleagues to support growth and best practices Ensure seamless integration of AI models into production systems with cross-team collaboration Monitor model governance, security, and compliance standards and address issues proactively Guide junior AI engineers and foster their professional development Design and develop sophisticated AI/ML frameworks for large‑scale data processing and prompt engineering Lead approaches applying ML for prompt engineering and NLP to solve complex problems Translate complex business requirements into AI/ML solutions Automate and optimize Big Data pipelines and AI-based systems Lead deployment of NLP models to classify/analyze complex text data Establish and sustain ML operations pipelines for scalable deployment, monitoring, and maintenance Design and evolve distributed AI systems integrating multiple models and data services Advance AI capabilities like multi-stage retrieval, autonomous workflows, and orchestration frameworks Set standards for reliability, safety, explainability, observability, and regulatory compliance across projects Collaborate with product and business teams to align tech initiatives with goals Manage complex tasks with substantial impact across projects Impact multiple projects and influence technical areas within the function Make critical decisions affecting project success and operational efficiency Key requirements Bachelor in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, or equivalent experience Knowledge of Python and data processing technologies (Big Data: Hadoop, Spark)Experience with NLP techniques (e.g., fuzzywuzzy) and models like BERT/Transformers Deep expertise in ML, including model selection, evaluation, and optimization Expert understanding of modern AI architectures including LLMs, agentic workflows, retrieval strategies, scalable orchestration Software development experience focusing on ML, generative AI, Big Data, and prompt engineering Experience with LLMs (GPT-3.5/4 or similar)Proficiency in Python, R, Java, or C++Experience deploying AI models and pipelines using MLOps tools Experience in building and maintaining data pipelines and ETL processes Extensive experience deploying large-scale AI systems in production Experience leading distributed AI platforms, real-time inference, and cloud-native AI services Advanced expertise in a technical domain with breadth across multiple domainsleadership and mentoringcross-functional collaborationstrong communication PythonRJava
