About the role

Head of Engineering - Fully Remote - AI / VFX I’m working with a highly technical, well-fundedstealth-mode startup operating within a major VFX and entertainment group, and we’re looking for aHead of Engineeringto lead a small, multidisciplinary engineering team. This is a genuinely unusual opportunity for an engineering leader who wants to sit at the intersection ofvisual effects, computer vision, generative AI and production engineering. The company is building proprietary technology that enables artists to do things that traditionally required highly specialized technical teams - with applications across film, television and commercial production.
The role: This is ahands-on leadership position. You won't be coming in simply to set strategy and manage managers. You'll lead the day-to-day work of a small engineering team, working closely withartists, researchers, producers and engineersto turn creative and production requirements into reliable technical solutions. You'll be responsible for: Setting priorities, ownership and technical direction across multiple initiatives Leading delivery in a fast-moving, deadline-driven production environment Providing technical guidance through architecture, design reviews, code reviews and troubleshooting Helping move ML, computer vision and generative AI research into production Improving the reliability, performance and maintainability of existing systems Building better engineering processes around planning, communication, testing and delivery Translating creative and operational requirements into clear engineering priorities We're looking for someone who has: Strong professional software engineering experience Experience leading engineers while remaining technically engaged Recent experience working inVFX or a closely related production environment Experience supporting creative teams and evolving workflows under real production deadlines Enough technical depth to challenge architecture and implementation decisions and earn the trust of experienced engineers A pragmatic, hands-on leadership style Strong communication and prioritization skills Experience withmachine learning, generative AI, computer vision, ML infrastructure, VFX pipelines, digital content creation, distributed systems, HPC or render infrastructurewould be highly valuable. Why it's interestingThis isn't another enterprise software role. The engineering team is working on genuinely difficult problems at the intersection ofAI and visual effects, and the technology you help build ultimately appears infilm, television and commercial productions. The team is deliberately small, meaning you'll have significant ownership and direct visibility into the impact of your work. If you're an engineering leader fromVFX, animation, gaming, virtual production, computer vision or another technically sophisticated creative environment, I'd love to speak.
