About the role

Mechanic Support/Assistant Perform minor mechanical repairs and maintenance. Assist mechanics in preventative maintenance and ensure proper performance and safety of all district vehicles. Perform assigned work following established policies and procedures. Clear and valid Texas CDL (class B) with passenger (P) and school bus (S) endorsements or ability to obtain one within 3 months of employment. Texas education certification for school bus drivers obtain one within 3 months of employment. Clear criminal background check. Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs under supervision. Ability to operate equipment and tools invoiced in vehicle repairs. Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts. Ability to read and understand documents including policies and procedures manuals. Ability to read instructions. Ability to complete required bus driver safety training. Ability to pass DOT alcohol and drug test and a yearly DOT physical exam. Ability to operate a school bus. One year experience in minor vehicle repair and maintenance. Perform minor mechanical repairs or work under the supervision of a mechanic to repair, and replace tires, bulbs, and accessories. Disassemble simple components and clean parts for reassembly. Assist mechanics with lifting and maneuvering heavy parts and components. Request parts and tools for mechanics as needed. Check fluid levels and replace oil, water, battery, and other fluids as needed. Help in maintaining accurate, updated records of preventative maintenance. Inspect, repair, change, and rotate tires. Help keep shop area and parking areas clean. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to established safety procedures. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc. Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and report any unsafe conditions that are not correctable to the shop foreman. Operate buses and vehicles as needed, including driving buses into the shop area for work. Serve as a substitute bus driver as needed and must be available for morning and afternoon routes. Other duties as assigned. Physical demands/environmental factors moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, crawling, climbing ladders, push, pull, crouch. Distinguish colors and drive a bus as needed. Work outside and inside in temperature extremes (hot and cold) Ability to lift and carry heavy weight (45 pounds or more) Workaround moving objects, and with vehicles and machinery with moving parts— frequent exposure to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular hours or extended hours. Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing during indicated work hours (confirm expected work hours with Supervisor) to confer with district personnel, students, and/or parents. The rest of the workday is committed to planning, preparing, implementing, and providing support as instructed by your Supervisor. This job's performance will be evaluated following provisions of the Board Policy on Evaluation of Paraprofessional Personnel.
