Foundational Platform Engineer – Azure Automation / AVD
Location: United States – Fully Remote
Contract: 6 Month Contract Start: ASAPWorking Model: RemoteAbout the RoleWe are looking for a hands-on Foundational Platform Engineer with strong experience across Microsoft Azure, Terraform and Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) to support a major infrastructure modernisation programme. You will work alongside an internal engineering team to transform manual and inconsistent infrastructure processes into repeatable, automated and scalable cloud services. This is more than a pure Terraform execution role. The ideal engineer will be comfortable taking an incomplete requirement, determining the right technical approach, building the automation and helping establish reusable infrastructure standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and develop Terraform-based Infrastructure as Code solutions within Azure.
Automate the provisioning and configuration of Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environments.
Build reusable infrastructure modules and standardised deployment patterns.
Help move infrastructure processes away from manual configuration towards automated provisioning.
Translate service requests and business requirements into automated infrastructure workflows.
Identify opportunities to improve infrastructure standardisation, scalability and repeatability.
Work closely with internal engineers to develop and implement automation solutions.
Provide knowledge transfer and help strengthen internal Infrastructure-as-Code capability.
Contribute to the wider evolution of cloud infrastructure, including landing zones, lifecycle automation and future observability capabilities.
Make pragmatic technical decisions where requirements are not fully defined and keep delivery moving.
Required Experience:
Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure infrastructure.
Strong Terraform experience, including Infrastructure as Code and reusable modules.
Proven experience with Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), Windows Virtual Desktop or similar VDI technologies.
Experience automating infrastructure provisioning and configuration.
Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure architecture and standardisation.
Experience taking manual or inconsistent infrastructure processes and turning them into automated solutions.
Comfortable working independently and making sensible engineering decisions with incomplete requirements.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Desirable Experience:
- Azure Landing Zones / Cloud Foundation.
- VMware, vSphere or vCenter.
- Azure and hybrid infrastructure environments.
- Infrastructure lifecycle management.
- ITSM/service-request driven automation.
- Monitoring, observability or automated remediation.
- Azure Bicep or ARM Templates.
- Experience working in large or complex enterprise environments.
- The Ideal Engineer
- The successful candidate will be someone who can:
- Understand the problem → define the standard → automate it → deliver it → transfer the knowledge.
