About the role

Overview As the organization’s chief storyteller, you shape and elevate Northern Trust’s enterprise narrative across internal and external channels. You translate complex topics into accessible, human-centered messaging that resonates with diverse audiences, including partners, clients, media, and investors. You’ll set editorial standards and collaborate with senior leaders to ensure consistent voice and differentiated positioning. This role blends strategic narrative development with high-quality writing to support executive communications and brand initiatives. You will work in a collaborative, cross-functional environment to drive a cohesive, impactful story for the firm. Compensation / Benefitsretirement benefits (401k and pension)health, dental, vision, and welfare benefitspaid time off and parental/caregiver leavelife and accident insurancediscretionary bonus program (potential equity component)well-being benefits Responsibilities Lead the organization’s narrative and editorial strategy across internal and external communications Translate complex business topics into clear, compelling messaging for diverse audiences Create high-impact content for executive communications, thought leadership, and brand positioning Establish and evolve editorial standards (tone, voice, storytelling frameworks) for consistency Coordinate messaging across functions, geographies, and business units to maintain a cohesive narrative Identify opportunities to connect stories across channels and audiences Collaborate with senior leaders, communications teams, and subject matter experts on messaging and storytelling approach Provide editorial guidance and coaching to communicators to raise storytelling capabilities Stay informed on industry trends and business priorities to keep messaging relevant Key requirements 10+ years in communications, journalism, content strategy, or related field Experience developing enterprise-level messaging and executive communications Ability to translate complex topics into clear, engaging content Experience working with senior executives and cross-functional partners Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field preferred Executive presence Influence and advisory skills Cross-functional collaboration Writing and editing Narrative development Editorial strategy and standards
