Payroll Manager
Location: Garden City, NY
Salary: $110,000–$120,000 annually
Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt
Position Overview: We are seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to oversee payroll operations for 1,000+ union and non-union employees across multiple states. This position is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local wage-and-hour regulations. The Payroll Manager will lead a team of Payroll Administrators and Specialists and oversee weekly payroll processing, payroll taxes, garnishments, benefit deductions, union payments, certified payrolls, reconciliations, and reporting. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with union payroll, multi-state payroll, and Viewpoint, along with excellent leadership and analytical skills.
Key Responsibilities: Manage and develop the payroll team, providing guidance, resources, and ongoing support to enhance performance and professional growth. Oversee weekly payroll processing for 1,000+ union and non-union employees across multiple states. Ensure payroll is processed accurately, timely, and in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Manage payroll taxes, garnishments, benefit deductions, union payments, certified payrolls, and other payroll-related transactions. Configure and maintain payroll tax and union settings within Viewpoint. Audit payroll records and identify and resolve discrepancies before payroll processing. Reconcile quarterly and annual payroll taxes and assist with year-end payroll activities. Partner with Finance, Human Resources, executive leadership, union representatives, and auditors to ensure accurate reporting and compliance. Work closely with ADP and other payroll-related vendors to troubleshoot and resolve payroll issues. Manage escalated payroll questions and issues from employees and internal stakeholders. Prepare payroll reports, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for management and audits. Maintain accurate payroll records and documentation in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements. Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, controls, reporting, and overall efficiency. Ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements and applicable union requirements. Support internal and external payroll audits and provide requested documentation.
Qualifications: Several years of progressive payroll experience, including payroll management or supervisory experience. Experience processing payroll for a large employee population of approximately 1,000+ employees. Strong experience with union and non-union payroll. Experience managing multi-state payroll. Knowledge of federal and state wage-and-hour laws and payroll tax regulations. Experience with Viewpoint strongly preferred. Experience with ADP or similar payroll platforms. Strong understanding of payroll taxes, garnishments, benefits deductions, certified payroll, and union payments. Experience supervising and developing payroll professionals. Strong analytical, reconciliation, and problem-solving skills. Excellent attention to detail with the ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven environment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across Finance, HR, operations, and executive leadership.
