The purpose of this job is to perform responsible law enforcement and supervisory work of assigned unit, personnel, and daily operations. Completes and reviews reports and documentation, oversees designated areas, and works with stakeholders to problem solve as required. Manages assigned administrative tasks, including processes, systems, and policy development, depending upon assignment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervises, manages, and evaluates assigned employees and makes decisions about hiring and discipline of employees; prioritizes and assigns work; develops and oversees employee work schedules and approves time away from work; provides and/or facilitates employee training and development; addresses employee concerns and/or problems; counsels and/or disciplines as appropriate; completes employee performance appraisals; determines or makes recommendations regarding new hires; and acts as liaison between employees and management.
Provides law enforcement service as a sworn officer.
Performs administrative tasks, participates in meetings, and communicates with internal and external stakeholders.
Reviews and conducts investigations to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and ordinances.
Provides effective customer service to citizens and ensures those supervised do the same.
Manages assigned systems and processes.
Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Work requires supervising and monitoring performance for a regular group of employees (2 or more full-time employees) including providing input on hiring, issuing formal discipline, conducting performance evaluations, and realigning work as needed. Such authority is not merely of a routine or clerical nature but requires the use of independent judgment.

Education and Experience:
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
Education and Experience:
60 or more college credit hours from an accredited college, preferred.
5 years of experience as a full-time commissioned law enforcement officer by time of appointment.
Field Training Officer experience preferred.
Licenses or
Certifications:
Must possess a Class A Peace Officer Standards and Training License.
Must possess a valid driver's license.

Maintain a permanent residence within a 50-mile straight line radius of the Columbia Police Department, 600 E. Walnut St., Columbia, MO, within 180 days of hire.
To work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
Work varied shifts to include nights, weekends, holidays and in an on-call capacity.

Incumbents required to maintain mental/physical health required to perform essential functions of the job. Required to successfully complete a post-offer pre-employment medical physical and at least biannually thereafter.
