Build and Lead a Centralized Purchasing Department A leading commercial and industrial mechanical contractor with more than $400 million in annual revenue and 650+ employees is seeking a Purchasing Manager to establish and lead a centralized purchasing department. Following significant company growth—from 12 to 50 Project Managers in just 20 months—the company now manages approximately $100 million in annual material purchasing. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced purchasing professional to build purchasing processes, strengthen supplier relationships, negotiate competitive pricing, and help develop a department that supports the company's continued expansion. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of commercial or industrial plumbing and mechanical materials, particularly pipe, valves, fittings (PVF), copper, PVC, and stainless steel. Candidates with backgrounds in mechanical or plumbing contracting, industrial PVF distribution, supply houses, or related manufacturing environments are encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities:
Establish and develop a centralized purchasing department to support a growing commercial and industrial mechanical construction operation.
Manage material procurement activities, including sourcing, purchasing, pricing, and vendor negotiations.
Develop and maintain strategic relationships with suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors.
Negotiate material pricing, terms, and purchasing agreements to improve cost control and profitability.
Coordinate with Project Managers, estimators, and construction teams to forecast material requirements and ensure timely availability.
Oversee purchasing of plumbing and mechanical materials, including pipe, valves, fittings, copper, PVC, and stainless steel.
Establish standardized purchasing procedures, vendor management practices, and procurement processes.
Monitor material pricing, supplier performance, lead times, and market conditions.
Identify opportunities to improve purchasing efficiency, reduce material costs, and leverage company-wide purchasing volume.
Develop scalable purchasing strategies to support continued organizational growth.
Build and lead a purchasing team as departmental needs expand.
Required
Qualifications:
Experience in purchasing, procurement, materials management, or supply chain operations within commercial or industrial plumbing, mechanical construction, PVF distribution, or a related industry.
Strong working knowledge of commercial/industrial plumbing materials, including pipe, valves, fittings, copper, PVC, and stainless steel.
Demonstrated experience with vendor negotiations, material pricing, purchasing, and supplier relationship management.
Ability to coordinate material requirements with project management and construction operations. Experience with material forecasting, procurement planning, and cost control.
Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
Qualifications:
Previous experience with a commercial plumbing or mechanical contractor, industrial PVF supply house, distributor, or related manufacturer.
Experience managing purchasing across multiple concurrent commercial or industrial construction projects.
Prior success developing purchasing processes, standardizing procurement procedures, or building a purchasing function.
Leadership experience with the ability to mentor, manage, and grow a purchasing team.
Opportunity:
This is an opportunity to take ownership of a critical business function within a well-established, rapidly growing mechanical contractor. The successful candidate will have the ability to shape purchasing strategy, influence company-wide material costs, develop key supplier partnerships, and build a department designed to support significant long-term growth. Relevant Backgrounds: Purchasing Manager | Procurement Manager | Purchasing Agent | Senior Buyer | Materials Manager | PVF Purchasing Specialist This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to grow their career in purchasing and procurement while gaining experience within the construction industry.
