Job Description:
FULL-TIME ENGLISH/HUMANITIES/SOCIAL SCIENCES INSTRUCTOR reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The English/Humanities/Social Sciences Instructor is responsible for classroom instruction in various English/Humanities/Social Sciences courses and assists in updating current curriculum; providing quality instruction for a diverse student population; and performing instructional duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Philosophy, Mission, Core Values, policies and procedures of the College.
Examples of Duties:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach five assigned English/Humanities/Social Sciences courses per semester in accordance with college’s workload policy; maintains written instructional standards; facilitates instruction using alternative delivery methods as needed; informs students in writing of instructional standards; posts and maintains ten office hours per week; participates in the assessment of student learning outcomes; establishes, maintains and submits accurate student and instructional records in a timely manner;
Teach English/Humanities/Social Sciences courses from developmental through advanced, such as courses in the following areas:
English Composition I (required)
American History
Public Speaking
Introduction to Sociology
Critical Thinking
Integrated Reading/Writing
Short Story and Poetry Provides academic advising and course selection assistance to assigned technical program students;
Assists in the preparation of course proposals, curriculum, instructional materials, and evaluation tools; reviews and updates course outlines, textbooks, and course procedures for English/Humanities/Social Sciences courses; assists with curriculum updates;
Applies and maintains standards of quality operating methods, processes, systems, and procedures; implements changes as necessary to maintain a successful English/Humanities/Social Sciences program; integrates professional training to continuously improve program quality;
Participates in English/Humanities/Social Sciences course scheduling, department, division and college meetings; utilizes retention and student engagement systems in collaboration with the Dean of Student Success, Instructional Coach, Division Chair, along with other faculty and student success staff; participate in initiatives to review and maintain the integrity of department curriculum;
Serves on college committees as required by the faculty collective bargaining agreement;
Performs other related duties as assigned;
Maintains compliance with all College policies and procedures.

Typical Qualifications:
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:
Knowledge of writing assessment practices is required;
Experience teaching English Composition is required;
Experience teaching American History is desired;
Experience instructing students from diverse cultures and/or backgrounds and students with diverse learning needs;
Experience teaching in multiple course modalities (asynchronous/hybrid/etc.) is preferred;
Experience working in Canvas or other learning management system is preferred;
Demonstrated professionalism and interpersonal skills are essential;
Expected to accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective and competent manner and to strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed;
Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment;
Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner;
Ability to effectively identify and resolve problems and to maintain strict confidentially related to sensitive information;
Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and take appropriate action to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and the public;
Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail.
Skill in using authentic assessment to evaluate students’ needs and progress; and
Skill in integrating technology into curriculum and other educational services.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
Master’s degree in English, American Studies, History, or a related discipline, or a master’s degree with 18 credit hours in English/Humanities/Social Science courses is required
At least two years’ experience teaching college-level writing
At least two years’ experience teaching college-level English, Humanities, or Social Sciences
Terminal degree in Education, English, American Studies, History, or a related discipline is preferred

Conditions may require walking, stooping, climbing, pushing, pulling, heavy lifting (less than or equal to 50 pounds), high climbing, bending, working in awkward positions handling equipment and materials.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 10 lbs.
Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone or videoconferencing system
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
