SMT Line Manager

Position Overview:
The SMT Line Manager will lead the establishment, launch, and ongoing operation of IRISS's surface mount technology manufacturing capability. This hands‑on leadership role is responsible for equipment implementation, process development, staffing, training, production performance, quality, safety, maintenance, and continuous improvement. The manager will build scalable, documented processes that support a high‑mix manufacturing environment and advance IRISS's mission of Humanizing Safety.
Responsibilities:
SMT Line Implementation and LaunchLead the planning, installation, commissioning, qualification, and production launch of the SMT line, including supporting equipment, utilities, tooling, software, and material flow.
Develop and manage the implementation schedule, project budget, risk register, production‑readiness criteria, and leadership status reporting.
Coordinate equipment vendors, contractors, Engineering, Quality, IT, Facilities, and Operations throughout installation and startup.
Complete trial builds and process validation before authorizing production release. Production and Process Management Establish and optimize solder paste printing, solder paste inspection, component placement, reflow, automated optical inspection, manual inspection, rework, and material‑handling processes.
Manage daily production priorities, staffing, changeovers, output, downtime, and coordination with Planning, Purchasing, Engineering, Quality, and downstream Manufacturing.
Create and maintain machine programs, recipes, thermal profiles, setup standards, work instructions, standard operating procedures, and inspection criteria.
Support new product introduction through design‑for‑manufacturability review, programming, tooling, first‑article builds, process validation, and production release. Quality and Continuous Improvement Monitor and improve first pass yield, defect and rework rates, scrap, schedule attainment, equipment uptime, overall equipment effectiveness, changeover time, and cost per assembly.
Lead root‑cause analysis and corrective action for soldering, placement, polarity, missing‑component, bridging, tombstoning, insufficient‑solder, and other process defects.
Establish and enforce ESD controls, moisture‑sensitive device handling, component storage, traceability, housekeeping, safety practices, and applicable quality requirements.
Complete measurable improvement projects that increase quality, capacity, reliability, safety, or cost performance. Team Leadership and Equipment Support Recruit, train, coach, schedule, and evaluate SMT operators and technicians.
Maintain a competency matrix and cross‑train at least two employees for each critical SMT process.
Plan and coordinate preventive maintenance, calibration, spare parts, feeders, stencils, consumables, software backups, and vendor technical support.
Maintain accurate production, quality, maintenance, and inventory records in applicable ERP, MES, or reporting systems.
Perform other duties and special projects consistent with the position and business needs.
Qualifications:
Five or more years of hands‑on SMT manufacturing experience, including equipment setup, programming, troubleshooting, process control, and production support.
Two or more years of supervisory, team‑lead, or manufacturing leadership experience.
Demonstrated experience with pick‑and‑place equipment, stencil printers, reflow ovens, AOI systems, feeders, stencils, and related SMT processes.
Working knowledge of IPC‑A‑610, J‑STD‑001, ESD controls, moisture‑sensitive devices, component traceability, and electronic workmanship standards.
Ability to read bills of materials, assembly drawings, schematics, component documentation, and manufacturing instructions.
Ability to analyze production data, identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and communicate results clearly.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience using ERP, MES, quality, or production‑reporting systems.
Ability to lead a startup operation while remaining actively involved on the manufacturing floor.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate or bachelor's degree in electronics, engineering technology, manufacturing, operations, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
Experience launching a new SMT line or bringing outsourced PCB assembly in‑house.
IPC specialist or trainer certification, Lean manufacturing training, Six Sigma training, or comparable continuous‑improvement experience.
Experience in a high‑mix, low‑volume manufacturing environment and with ISO 9001 quality systems.
Experience with SPI, selective soldering, X‑ray inspection, conformal coating, or electronics test processes. Work Environment and Physical Requirements
This position works primarily in an electronics manufacturing environment and regularly requires standing, walking, bending, reaching, and working near production equipment. The employee must be able to inspect small electronic components and assemblies, use a computer and manufacturing interfaces, and occasionally lift or move up to 35 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. Appropriate personal protective equipment and ESD controls must be followed. Schedule flexibility, overtime, or occasional travel may be required during installation, launch, maintenance, or production‑critical events.
