Work Mix: ~60–70% advisory & planning / 30–40% tax return review· Busy season: Capped at 50 hours per weekABOUT SMEED CPASMEED CPA is a Virtual Family Office CPA practice providing tax advisory to high-performing, successful entrepreneurs — clients nationwide, all serviced virtually, around 650 tax returns a year. We are advisory-first: planning happens through the year, not in April. Our clients work with an advisor who knows their whole picture — business, real estate, family and long-term wealth — not a different specialist for every form. Our advisors are thought partners on business structure, real estate, retirement and wealth transfer, not processors of forms. That is what the family office model means in practice: one trusted advisor who sees the client's entire financial picture and plans across all of it, all year — the way a wealthy family's own office would, delivered virtually. SMEED CPA has been built on that model since 2007.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
You'll split your time between forward-looking advisory work and hands-on technical review — staying sharp on both sides of the practice:· Lead tax planning conversations for a curated roster of entrepreneurial clients across real estate, business structuring, high-income professionals, and estate/wealth transfer· Spend roughly 30–40% of your time reviewing a variety of tax returns — including 1040, 1120S, 1065, 1120, 990, and 1041 — ensuring accuracy, quality, and alignment with each client's broader strategy· Use tax return review as a lens for advisory insight — spotting planning opportunities, not just checking for errors· Build and maintain deep, ongoing relationships — you're a thought partner, not a processor. Owning a client relationship here means trust, retention, and spotting the next planning opportunity — there is no sales quota in this role· You report directly to a partner — there are no layers between you, the partners, and your clients· Run a year-round advisory calendar for your roster: recurring planning conversations, quarterly projections and estimates, and follow-through until each strategy is actually implemented· Prepare projections and estimates, carry out tax research, and turn your conclusions into clear, plain-English summaries clients can act on· Handle IRS and state tax notices for your clients, with partner support on anything contentious· Raise the whole team as you review: clear, constructive review notes that coach preparers and lift quality across the practice· Leverage modern tax and workflow technology to work efficiently and keep the client experience seamless. Our tax work runs on Instead, with client collaboration and workflow in TaxDomeYOUR FIRST 90 DAYSBy day 30, you'll know our clients, our technology and our standards, and be reviewing returns to firm standard with a partner alongside you. By day 60, you'll be leading planning conversations for your roster and drafting strategy recommendations. By day 90, you'll own those client relationships day-to-day — planning calendar, projections and follow-through — and, where the opportunity exists, be putting your first strategies into effect for clients. WHO THRIVES HERE· You're a forward thinker who questions "the way it's always been done"· You're technology-driven — you adopt new tools and workflows early, not just tolerate them· You're self-motivated — you don't need someone watching over your shoulder to do great work· You feel invested in client outcomes, not just deliverables· You're comfortable holding both precision (technical review) and perspective (advisory strategy) at the same time· You read the room, adjust your communication style, and earn trust before you give advice· You write the way you advise: clearly, in plain English a business owner can act onQUALIFICATIONS
