Registered Nurse - Emergency RoomThis position involves working in a combined Emergency and Urgent Care unit. The department serves as an Adult and Pediatric Level 2 Trauma Center. Emergency and Urgent Care treatment areas include 38 beds and 5 trauma bays/resuscitation rooms. There is no separate Fast Track, but Urgent Care services are available. Patients are triaged upon arrival, and all nurses are expected to be involved in triage assessments. Emergency room holds are intermixed with active emergency cases. There are 4 dedicated psych rooms within the emergency department. Security is present 24/7 but not housed within the department. On average, the department treats 140-180 patients per day. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3 in the emergency room and 1:6 in urgent care. Common patient diagnoses include chest pain, abdominal pain, sepsis, syncope, elevated heart rate, headaches, and patients with suicidal ideation. The role involves administering common drips such as heparin, nitroglycerin, diltiazem, amiodarone, nicardipine, and norepinephrine. The emergency department is staffed with ED physicians, mid-levels, and urgent care physicians. A charge nurse is available, who, during day shifts, typically does not take an assignment, while night shifts may vary based on department activity. Support staff includes Health Unit Coordinators and techs who assist with patient care and administrative tasks. Respiratory therapy is accessible 24/7 but is not present in the department around the clock. Nurses are responsible for drawing labs, and while phlebotomy handles blood cultures, nurses or techs may take them if necessary. Shifts are scheduled through an RN scheduler, with no self-scheduling available. Weekend and holiday coverage are required every other time. There are no on-call requirements, though standby may occasionally be necessary for low census situations. Floating is infrequent and typically limited to patient-sitter roles. Scrubs must be a solid color and maintain a clean, professional appearance. Unit-specific orientation consists of three days, including computer-based training and unit orientation with a preceptor.
