About the role
The State Geologist leads the New York State Geological Survey and oversees the Museum's Geology Department within the New York State Museum, one of the nation's oldest and largest state museums. This senior scientist position involves conducting original geological research, managing statewide geologic mapping programs, supervising professional staff, developing competitive grants, and stewarding significant geological collections. The role requires translating geological research into public-facing exhibitions, educational programs, and interpretive experiences for broad audiences, while representing the Museum and Survey with state agencies, academic institutions, and professional organizations.
Key qualifications:
Master's degree and five years of professional experience, or Ph. D. and three years of professional experience
Ph. D. in geology or closely related geoscience field
Strong record of original geological research and peer-reviewed publication
Significant experience leading and supervising professional scientists and technical staff
Experience developing and managing competitive grants and geological mapping programs
Ability to communicate geological research effectively to broad public audiences including children and families
