Job ID: 6225 Practice Details
The University of Louisville and UofL Health are seeking a board-certified Academic Physiatrist to serve as PM&R Residency Program Director while maintaining an active clinical practice within a respected academic rehabilitation program. This is an immediate leadership opportunity.
The opportunity:
- Lead an established categorical PM&R Residency Program with four residents per year and a more than 50-year history.
- Provide continuous leadership, mentorship, and educational direction for residents and rotating learners.
- Join a talented, collaborative resident group and a dedicated faculty team of clinicians and educators.
- Practice in both inpatient and outpatient settings at Frazier Rehabilitation Institute, part of UofL Health.
- Clinical interests in general rehabilitation medicine and neurorehabilitation are welcomed. Spinal cord injury experience is a plus, though not required.
- Opportunity to tailor clinical responsibilities for a candidate with meaningful research interests
- Practice structure
- The anticipated assignment is:40% Residency Program Director / teaching 60% clinical practice
- The educational component will remain at least 40%. Clinical responsibilities may include a blend of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation practice, based on the physician s background and interests.
- A highly experienced Residency Coordinator, who has supported the program for more than 10 years, is in place. Dr. Kaelin and the Division leadership will provide mentorship and support during the transition.
Ideal candidate:
The preferred candidate will be board certified by the ABPMR or AOBPMR and bring a genuine commitment to resident education, mentorship, and academic leadership.
Candidates of interest include:
- PM&R physicians with prior Residency Program Director or Associate Program Director experience
- Academic physiatrists with significant teaching and leadership experience
- Experienced PM&R physicians transitioning from nonacademic practice who can clearly articulate their interest in academic medicine and residency leadership
- The program will consider physicians who are at least three years beyond residency training. Visa sponsorship is available for qualified, board-certified candidates
- Recruiter's Insight
- The Opportunity to Build, Lead, and Leave a Legacy.
This is far more than a clinical PM&R position. It is a meaningful academic leadership opportunity for a physiatrist who wants to make a real and lasting impact. With the Division Chief currently serving as Acting Program Director, the incoming physician will have the opportunity to provide continuity, revitalize the residency program, and help shape its future direction.
For the right candidate, this is a chance to build something that matters: strengthen resident education, mentor emerging physiatrists, refine the learning environment, and create a program culture that will influence physicians and patients for years to come.
A Purposeful Role With Real Influence.
The PM&R Residency Program has a long, successful history and a strong group of residents and faculty. The next Program Director will have a meaningful platform to lead rather than simply maintain the status quo. You will be able to bring your own ideas, clinical interests, and leadership style to a program where your contribution will be visible and valued.
This role is particularly well suited for a physician who is energized by teaching, mentorship, program development, and the opportunity to help guide the next generation of rehabilitation physicians.
A Balanced Academic and Clinical Career.
The position offers a defined balance of approximately 40% Residency Program Director/teaching responsibilities and 60% clinical practice, with flexibility for candidates who have meaningful research interests. Clinical opportunities are available in both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation settings through UofL Health and the Frazier Rehabilitation Institute.
You will be supported by an experienced Residency Coordinator who has been with the program for more than a decade, as well as Division Chief Dr. Darryl Kaelin, who will be available to help the incoming leader transition successfully into the role.
A Collaborative Academic Health System.
The University of Louisville and UofL Health offer the resources of an integrated academic health system, combining clinical practice, education, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Physicians have access to a broad network of specialists, clinical staff, and academic colleagues across UofL Health, the Frazier Rehabilitation Institute, and the University of Louisville School of Medicine.
This is an environment where physicians can pursue new ideas, advance patient care, participate in academic medicine, and pass their knowledge forward to future generations of physicians.
