Staff Software Engineer, Gustie Assist

Overview In this role, you will own and evolve Otto, Gusto’s AI agent that assists support engineers in solving payroll, benefits, and compliance issues. You’ll manage end-to-end platform work across the agent runtime, tool layer, backend, and advocate-facing UI, focusing on safe, auditable actions in production. You’ll push the capabilities of autonomous, tool-using agents with human-in-the-loop approvals, while maintaining trustworthy evaluation and monitoring systems. You’ll collaborate with Product, Data, Design, and CX teams to ship impactful capabilities and mentor engineers to raise the bar on scalable, responsible AI.
