About Broadway Housing Communities (BHC)Founded in 1983, Broadway Housing Communities (BHC) is a community-based nonprofitcommitted to addressing the challenges of poverty and homelessness among adults, children, and families in Upper Manhattan. BHC has developed five supportive housing buildings that provide permanent, affordablehousing and holistic services for individuals and families living in deep poverty. Our workincludes an award-winning early childhood center and opportunities for community engagementthrough the arts. BHC’s flagship project in the National Historic District of Sugar Hill features 124 units of affordable housing, an early childhood education center, and the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling, along with other vital community facilities.
Position Overview: We are seeking a dedicated, energetic and committed Special Education Disabilities Coordinator to work with our educational team to ensure the delivery of exceptional services toour students and families. This role includes support in curriculum development and fosteringpositive and effective collaboration with educational staff, families and other necessaryagencies, while following BHC policies and procedures, Head Start and NYC Department of Education Performance Standards, Article 47, and other guidelines. The ideal candidate willbring strong leadership, management skills, and a passion for early childhood special educationto help us continue making a positive impact on children's lives.
Key Responsibilities: Lead the development and implementation of innovative curriculum tailored to preschool students with special needs, ensuring alignment with educational standards and best practices. Supervise teaching staff and support personnel, providing mentorship, performance evaluations, and professional development opportunities. Collaborate with families, educators, and community partners to create individualizededucation plans (IEPs) that support each child's growth and success. Manage program operations including budgeting, resource allocation, and compliance with state and federal regulations related to special education. Lead strategic planning initiatives aimed at enhancing program quality, expanding services through fundraising efforts, and fostering an inclusive school culture. Represent the preschool at community events and public speaking engagements to promote awareness of our programs and advocate for early childhood special education. Oversee classroom environments to ensure safety, engagement, and optimal learning conditions for all students.
Qualifications & Skills
Must have: Special Education Teacher Professional Certification B-2 Proven experience in teaching students with disabilities in early childhood settings, with a strong background in classroom management. Demonstrated leadership skills with experience with supporting supervising staff and managing educational programs. Knowledge of curriculum development, educational administration, budgeting, and strategic planning (knowledge of Reggio Emilia approach and philosophy a plus!).Strong management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple priorities efficiently. Excellent communication skills suitable for public speaking, parent engagement, and team collaboration. Experience working with diverse student populations and familiarity with IEP processes is highly desirable. Master’s degree preferred; valid certification in early childhood or special education required.
