About the role

Overview In this role you will lead user-centered software design within MITRE’s HSI/UX team, translating user insights into scalable, effective solutions for government-facing systems. You will work with cross-functional teams and sponsors to frame problems, deliver iterative designs, and ensure usability and safety across the product lifecycle. You’ll apply UX and front-end expertise to influence mission-critical projects and mentor teammates. The position emphasizes collaboration, technical excellence, and a strong user focus in a public-interest setting. Compensation / Benefitscompetitive benefitsexceptional professional development opportunitiesculture of innovationcollaboration-focused environmenttechnology excellencepublic-interest impact Responsibilities Lead end-to-end human-centered design from research to prototyping and usability evaluation Apply AI-assisted design tools to generate and refine interface concepts Translate user, operational, and system requirements into design inputs aligned with safety-critical needs Provide technical guidance to small multidisciplinary teams Collaborate with designers, researchers, engineers, and sponsors to drive impact Advocate for end-user needs and ensure design principles are applied throughout Develop and maintain design systems and UI guidelines Mentor early career team members Key requirements Bachelor degree in one of listed fields≥5 years research, design, development, and prototyping using user-centered design Experience with user research methods and usability testing Proficiency with design software (Figma, Miro, Sketch, Axure RP, Balsamiq, Lucidchart, Adobe XD)Strong communication and sponsor-facing presentation skills Experience leading technically diverse teams Secret U.S. Government security clearance eligibility (or ability to obtain)On-site work requirement (minimum 3 days/week)Strong interpersonal skillsexcellent verbal and written communicationmentoring and coaching User research methods Usability testing Interaction design
