Overview
In this role you support and enhance substation automation, HMI, and control systems to improve grid safety, reliability, and efficiency. You will work with digital substations and real-time tools to boost situational awareness and resilience, contributing to California’s clean energy goals. The position is technically challenging and highly visible, offering opportunities to shape modernization initiatives. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful engineering solutions. This role combines hands-on engineering with strategic development of new technologies.
Responsibilities Inspect existing electrical equipment and systems for condition assessment and improvements Perform event analyses and root cause investigations with corrective action plans Prepare technical reports, calculations, and design plans for projects of increasing scope Carry out independent engineering work under guidance on techniques and criteria Model power systems using software tools and stay updated on technology and standards Oversee preventive maintenance to ensure safety, quality, reliability, and regulatory compliance Validate/qualify supporting infrastructure throughout its life cycle Develop facility design including electrical system sizing, one-line diagrams, and equipment selection Support new technology strategy and its integration into operations to improve service quality Act as project sponsor with technical assistance to move projects through lifecycle Uphold protection of physical, cyber, and data assets with high integrity
Key requirements Bachelor's degree in Engineering or scientific/technical/math field Two or more years of engineering experience in operations, production, construction or maintenance environments Valid Class C Driver's License Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred)Current California Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or ability to obtain (preferred)Experience with substation automation systems and equipment (HMI, PACs, PLCs, RTUs) (preferred)Experience with substation communication protocols (IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, Modbus Plus) (preferred)Experience with OT OS (Linux RHEL, Windows Server) (preferred)Knowledge of protective relays and SEL/GE equipment (preferred)Experience with SCADA, IEDs, and substations troubleshooting (preferred)Understanding of electric utility operations, grid modernization, digital substations, wildfire mitigation (preferred)Ability to collaborate across engineering, operations, maintenance, and cybersecurity teams (preferred)Analytical thinking Troubleshooting Collaborative mindset Substation automation systems and equipmentHMI, PACs, PLCs, RTUsIEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, Modbus Plus
